Authentic Vacations Adventures – Respecting Culture and Law in Tanzania

When traveling with Authentic Vacations Adventures, we expect all clients to comply with the laws, customs, and cultural practices of Tanzania and any other countries visited during the trip. Understanding and respecting local laws ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for you and the communities you interact with.

1. Respect for Local Customs and Culture

  • Tanzania is a culturally conservative and predominantly religious country.

  • Modest dress is recommended, especially in rural areas, markets, and religious sites. Women should avoid revealing clothing, particularly in Zanzibar and other Muslim-majority regions.

  • Public displays of affection should be kept minimal.

  • Always ask permission before photographing local people, religious leaders, or Maasai communities.

2. Drug and Alcohol Laws

  • Possession or use of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited and punishable by severe penalties, including imprisonment.

  • Alcohol is permitted but should be consumed responsibly. Public drunkenness and disorderly behavior are considered offensive and may result in fines or police involvement.

  • Drug-related offenses are treated very seriously, even in small amounts. Avoid carrying or accepting packages from strangers.

3. Wildlife and Environmental Protection

  • Do not feed, harass, or get too close to wild animals.

  • It is illegal to purchase, possess, or export wildlife products such as ivory, tortoiseshell, coral, or endangered animal skins.

  • Littering is prohibited in national parks and protected areas. Please respect the natural environment.

  • Stay on marked trails and follow your guide’s instructions at all times.

4. Smoking and Public Behavior

  • Smoking is not allowed in public transport, government buildings, restaurants, or near fuel stations.

  • Loud or aggressive behavior in public is discouraged and may attract police attention.

5. Photography and Drones

  • It is illegal to take photos of government buildings, military zones, airports, or police/military personnel.

  • Drone usage is regulated in Tanzania and requires official approval from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA). Unauthorized drone use can lead to confiscation and fines.

6. LGBTQ+ Travelers

  • While LGBTQ+ travelers are welcome, please be aware that same-sex relationships are considered illegal under Tanzanian law.

  • We advise discretion and respect for local cultural sensitivities.

7. Bribery and Corruption

  • Do not attempt to bribe police officers or public officials. Corruption is illegal, and such actions may lead to arrest.

  • If you encounter legal or immigration issues, contact your guide or local embassy for assistance.

8. Offenses and Legal Action

  • Any traveler who violates local laws may be subject to local prosecution.

  • Authentic Vacations Adventures cannot intervene in legal matters or prevent local law enforcement action.

  • We reserve the right to terminate services without refund if a traveler engages in illegal activity or behavior that endangers others or disrupts the group.
