Day-by-Day on the Machame Trail: A Journey Through the Clouds
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
- Elevation Gain: From 1,800 meters to 3,010 meters
- Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
Your adventure begins at the Machame Gate, where you’ll be surrounded by the rich, green tapestry of the rainforest. As you ascend, keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and vibrant birdlife. Your first campsite, Machame Camp, sits above the forest, and offers the first glimpse of Kibo’s glaciated dome if the clouds part in your favor.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
- Elevation Gain: From 3,010 meters to 3,845 meters
- Trekking Time: 4-6 hours
Leaving the forest behind, the trail gets steeper, entering the heath and moorland zone. Giant lobelias and senecios dot the landscape. Shira Camp offers a panoramic view of the mountain, which glows during the sunset, adding a touch of magic to your journey.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
- Elevation Gain and Loss: From 3,845 meters to 4,630 meters down to 3,976 meters
- Trekking Time: 6-7 hours
This day is pivotal for acclimatization. You will ascend to the Lava Tower, a prominent volcanic rock formation. Afterwards, you descend to Barranco Camp. This day’s journey lets you “climb high, sleep low,” aiding in acclimatization. Barranco Camp is famous for the Barranco Wall, a towering cliff face looming in the near distance.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation Gain: From 3,976 meters to 3,995 meters
- Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Tackle the Barranco Wall in the morning, which provides some exhilarating, albeit challenging, scrambling. Although daunting-looking, it is perfectly manageable. You’ll be rewarded with incredible views of Kibo’s southern glaciers. The trail then descends slightly to Karanga Valley, the last water stop before the summit.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation Gain: From 3,995 meters to 4,673 meters
- Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
As vegetation thins out, the landscape changes to scree and rocks. The trail climbs steadily towards Barafu Camp, set on a barren ridge. Rest and prepare for a night-time ascent to the summit.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
- Elevation Gain and Loss: From 4,673 meters to 5,895 meters down to 3,110 meters
- Trekking Time: 12-14 hours
Depart just before midnight for the summit, the most challenging part of your trek. The reward at Stella Point at dawn is indescribable, with glaciers and the curvature of the earth visible. A further hike leads you to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating your triumph, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
- Descent: From 3,110 meters to 1,640 meters
- Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
The final descent takes you back into the rainforest, where the air is thick with oxygen and the scent of damp earth. A celebration awaits at the Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate.
