The Magical Lemosho Route: A Path Less Traveled
Selected for its scenic variety and relatively low foot traffic, the Lemosho Route is often regarded as the most beautiful path to the summit of Kilimanjaro. It boasts different climatic zones, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, leading to the icy Arctic zone at Uhuru Peak. This 8-day journey is not just a climb; it’s a voyage through a tapestry of biodiversity and stunning landscapes.
Day 1: From Arusha to Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your adventure begins with a drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate, where the lush world of Kilimanjaro starts to unfold. The trek starts gently through rich, verdant rainforest, where the chirps of exotic birds and perhaps an occasional sighting of the shy Colobus monkeys enhance the trek to your first camp at Mti Mkubwa, nestled amidst towering trees.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
As you ascend, the forest thins out, and the landscape transitions to heather and moorland, offering views of the Rift Valley and Shira Ridge. This is a day filled with the splendor of vast mountain views and the ancient, tranquil feel of the Shira plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
This is more of an acclimatization day, with a gentle trek east across the Shira Plateau leading you to Shira 2 Camp. Here, you stand on one of the most significant flat areas on the mountain. With clear skies, the view of the distant glacier glistens as the sun sets, a truly humbling sight.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
The route now turns toward the beautiful but challenging Lava Tower, a 300-foot tall volcanic plug. This day is crucial for acclimatization; you ascend to over 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Camp. This segment is marked by the astonishing view of the Western Breach and Breach Wall.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with navigating the famous Barranco Wall. It is a challenging and thrilling scramble, but incredibly rewarding with panoramic views. The descent to Karanga Valley and another slight ascent to Karanga camp allows for a shorter but vital acclimatization day.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Trekking from Karanga to Barafu Camp, you’ll notice the scenery thinning out, and the landscape becomes more rocky and barren. Barafu Camp is situated on a rocky, exposed ridge. Preparation for the summit day starts here, with an early dinner and rest before the midnight trek to the summit.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Summit day: a midnight start with headlamps lighting the way under the starlit sky. The ascent to Stella Point on the crater rim is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. But, witnessing the sunrise from Stella Point rewards you with one of the most stunning sights in Africa. Another hour’s trek leads you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. After the summit, the descent follows back to Barafu for a brief rest, then down to Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Arusha
The final descent takes you through the lush forest, completing your circle of climate zones. Reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your well-deserved certificates. From here, we transport you back to Arusha, where you can continue to reflect on your incredible achievement.
